Founded in 1943 in the shadow of St. Mary's Cathedral in the heart of St. Francis Abbey, St. Mary's Rugby Football Club was established by a group of passionate local sportsmen, including Harry Bedford, Paddy McSweeney, Michael Bourke, Michael Kelly, Paddy Casey, Tommy Carr and Michael Doran. Their vision was to create a rugby club that would provide opportunities for the many young men of the area to play and enjoy the game.

In April 1943, the club applied for membership of the Munster Branch of the IRFU. Proposed by Peter Galbraith of Garryowen and seconded by Charlie St. George of Young Munster, St. Mary's was officially admitted and began its journey.

The club's first meeting was held in St. Mary's Hall, affectionately known as "Todsies". Michael Kelly was elected President, Paddy Casey became Secretary, and Tom Joe Finnan was appointed Treasurer before being succeeded by Michael Doran due to work commitments. They were joined on the committee by Tommy Carr, Harry Bedford, Tawdy Clancy, Sean Keogh, Peter McNamara, Paddy McSweeney and Joe Hanrahan.

Like many junior clubs of the era, St. Mary's did not initially have a permanent home ground. Training sessions took place on the Island Bank, while in poor weather the forwards famously practised scrummaging in their socks on the floor of St. Mary's Dance Hall. Home fixtures were played at a variety of venues, including Scouts Field, Slattery's Paddock, Regan's Field and Nash's Field, before the club eventually established its permanent home in Corbally.

Success came quickly for St. Mary's RFC. In just its second competitive season, the club captured its first senior honour by winning the City Cup in 1945-46, successfully defending the trophy the following season.

The club reached its first Munster Junior Cup Final in 1948-49 before achieving its greatest senior success in 1967-68, when St. Mary's were crowned Munster Junior Cup Champions.

Throughout more than 80 years of competition, St. Mary's has enjoyed success at every level of the game. Senior honours include the Munster Junior Cup, Munster Junior Challenge Cup, Munster Junior Plate, Munster Junior Division 2 League (Liam Fitzgerald Trophy), City Cup, Gleeson League, Dyer Cup, Webb Cup, and multiple Transfield Cup victories.

The club has also built a proud tradition of developing young talent. Youth teams have won numerous Munster, North Munster, and Limerick titles, with one of the club's greatest achievements coming in 2011-12, when the Under-19 side completed a remarkable season by winning the North Munster League, John English Cup, Pan Munster League, and the All-Ireland Under-19 Championship.

More than 80 years after its foundation, St. Mary's RFC continues to thrive both on and off the field. The club provides rugby for players of all ages and abilities, from Minis and Youths through to Adult rugby, while fostering a welcoming, inclusive and family-friendly environment at the heart of the Corbally community.
